Our Girls Afternoon Tea Party ~ Day 56

The tea party in honour of a lovely new friend Susanne (left). Miss Cara hosted the party and received a beautiful Precious Package.

Sushi made an appearance on the tea table.

Old vintage books were strung from a beautifully fragrant tree (each time I hung one from a branch, the woodiness and zesty leaf smell entered the air).

What is a Mad Hatters Tea Party without clocks...after all,we can't miss any important dates (this being one of them).

And she even managed to do so whilst wearing gloves.

We are loving Agnes's amazing outfit which included a fob watch, top hat and a polkadot corset.

Even Alice joined us for a cuppa...

Six ladies and one ginger cheshire enjoyed an afternoon tea that perhaps was somewhat more civilised with the perfect amount of mad hatter thrown in. And we had fun. Badminton, tea galore to choose from (we sampled a number along the way), cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, even sushi adding a contemporary twist, was part of our very pleasant afternoon tea. We enjoyed it so much so that we are already talking about ideas for our next Tea Party and croquet may just be involved.

On a side note, Jamie Oliver comes to Ipswich next Saturday the 3rd of March and we here at Serendipity central are a wee bit silly with excitement!!! So stay tuned for further posts including our new Jamie display window in Precious Packages...!!!

Yikers!! Did anyone watch on Monday night about how fresh our food really is?? I'm talking apples on our supermarket shelves aged anywhere up to 12 months and that was across all states and supermarkets.

I have really been enjoying my lemons off the tree. There is a hint of sweetness and the flavour is a sensation. I squeeze them into warm water every morning but can I tell you that I can taste the difference between those and the shelf bought variety. What it all comes down to is Fresh definitely is Best. If it tastes better then that is the test for how good it's for you too I feel.

A Cuppa Tea (Said in my best Cockney) ~ Day 53

How ever you choose to drink your tea (big mugs, pinkie poised, milk two sugars, black, chai or Russian Caravan) there is something about drinking it from a fine china tea set that makes it taste even better, I think.

The art of drinking tea in general may have been lost but it is something that some of my customers enjoy reminiscing about. For one customer it is the memory of the finest tea set only being used when special guests such as the local priest visited that now sits protected behind the glass cabinet to be looked at by new generations but never touched. For another it is over a collection of beautiful Shelley Trios from when Ipswich still had fine department stores. Many years on the owner is still in search for that one last particular Trio to join the others.

Apparently when Fine China is used on a regular basis it remains strong (it may incur a chip or two along the way but to me that is character) but when put away as a show piece only, it becomes brittle and fragile. I'm not sure in the truth of this but if there was any, maybe it is time we got our tea sets out to enjoy a cuppa.

Tea Party; Mad Hatter Style ~ Day 50

I have been awoken after falling asleep to a really bad film by a friend to discuss more pleasant things. We have a Tea Party to plan for another friend this Wednesday and we're doing it in style, Mad Hatter style to be exact.
Pink Flamingos, A Talking Rabbit, Chesire Cat and Scattered Playing Cards are all part of the plan. It will be fun to see what we come up with over the weekend...be sure to stay tuned for the next installment of the party planning.

Be Mine with The Shop Around the Corner ~ Day 46

Hampers have been wrapped and flowers delivered as sweethearts all around Ipswich and Brisbane receive a token of their Valentine's love today. I have also been fortunate enough (I feel so lucky!!) to receive a special delivery from my own darling this morning. I really am loving this day of smiles all around town with the excitement of today.

Tonight I am thinking a perfect film to watch would be the adorable 1940s romantic comedy, Shop Around The Corner as we share strawberries and chocolate sauce with some dear friends at their place. And speaking of all things lovely to share, I may just have to take this delicious cake dotted with miniature rose buds which has just arrived in a box from fourthchild, our favourite cake shop in town...xx

The Hampton's Cottage ~ Day 45

At the moment I seem to be obsessed with all things Hamptons. It's a little more sophisticated than my normal tastes but it certainly is influencing it and seems to be what I think about most when it comes to decor currently.

This is the redecorated kitchen of a Hampton's Cottage and I'm a L-O-V-I-N it to bits. The walls in the Duck Egg Blue is just gorgeous and I'm loving the Blue and White plates in the wall rack.

I think you'd be very happy whipping up some delicious meal for the family in there. Or even just simply pottering around there on the weekend with a hot cup of tea reading the paper.

Blowing Bubbles ~ Day 44

Lily has been learning to blow bubbles. What to learn from this then, (and I'm not talking about the fact that the stuff gets everywhere and she insists on wearing it behind her ear like she has seen in a movie)?

That the wonderment and excitement that kids find in these small achievements is a sight to behold. I want to find that simple pleasure in the small things again...oh to be like kids again xo

The Little Women Wrap up ~ Day 41

I'm not certain if I read Little Women as a girl. I do remember watching the film and have done so various times. As I was reading it for Bookclub it did seem rather familiar and gave me a sneaking suspicion I had. I have always had the book and have collected vintage copies from time to time and think it slightly self-indulgant with sharing the same name and all.

So in the wake of a storm, in the cosiness of Serendipity, our glasses filled with wine and a cheese platter to enjoy, Book Club commenced for the first time to the gentle flicker of candles. With the story firmly on our minds we discussed the sometimes challenging questions (I'm sure my theory teachers from college would have be impressed), laughed and generally enjoyed each others company.

To learn that Louisa did not enjoy writing the book came somewhat as a surprise because generally it is a well loved story (and why we are reading The Chase by Louisa for next month to hopefully receive a deeper insight to the author and compare the two stories). Of course we discussed with passion the relationship between Jo March and Laurie (If you have read the book you will know exactly what I mean and if you haven't I suggest you do) and overall the beauty that is the March family with the moral and emotional trials that the girls face (and we still relate to today), overcome and learn from. The messages of fairness, forgiveness, living simply, hardwork balanced with pleasure (and that pleausure without hardwork is not so much of a pleasure) becomes somewhat a guide to life in this ahhhh sigh, fast paced world.

PS Did you know that the 1994 film version of Little Women is based on both Little Women and Good Wives. Some publications of Little Women have both stories and others only the original version of Little Women before they incorporated both.

The Road Trip ~ Day 40

My loves, forgive me but I will need to do the follow up blog to our first Serendipity Book Club (a wonderful success if I may say so myself) tomorrow. I have been out of the shop all day as we took a road trip to Brisbane.

All to be revealed in good time as to why but we did stop in at the glorious Hamptons boutique and cafe in Paddington for lunch. I tell ya, I'm in LOVE (there I go again, is it to do with the season? I'm not sure, maybe...) with that place.

You are met by welcoming hydrangeas at the front door, inside is filled with beautiful and elegant pieces and splashes of coastal style but perhaps my most favourite of all was the incredible walk in pantry filled with gourmet goodness. Today has been hot and humid and when going through some images this one immediately struck a chord. Think I would like to be sitting there right now with a cold drink and enjoying the view as I casually browse a favourite magazine. Aren't the stools such vivid colours and against the gorgeousness of the ocean too.

March will soon be here which also means Autumn (Fall) is not too far away and things should begin to cool down. Think I would like to fit in a stint at the beach before then but not sure that will happen. And so I stare more longingly at this photo...

Raw Foodie Picnic ~ Day 37

We had a lazy Sunday afternoon. Just the way they should be. Caught a mid afternoon nap and then went and enjoyed our Raw Foodie picnic at the Kholo Botanical Gardens with its beautiful waterfall and lily pads.

The dishes were spread out on picnic blankets (I really didn't photograph the spread but if you keep an eye out on Cara's blog you just might see some photos over the next few days). We enjoyed sumptuous salads, savoury pumpkin cakes seasoned with cumin and topped with avocado dip and tomato, fruit dipped into chocolate sauce, tantalising tiramisu and of course my rawberry cake (pictured above) that saw its plate clean by the time I took it home.

The Kholo Botanical Gardens is filled with tranquility, a great place for the kids to play (they were tadpole catching above) and is a wonderful place to share company with good friends.

The Lounge Room Colour Palette ~ Day 35

There may be a few different things happening here with styles (though I am slightly eclectic and happy to mix and match), but today I have been browsing online for further ideas on a colour palette for our lounge space.

I am particularly loving aqua, pink, yellow with touches of orange from the Kaffe Fassett painting. Our lounge space in our Queenslander is in the centre of the house and has its only natural light spilling through from the stain glass windows in the dining room that it joins with and so it will be important to keep the colour base itself light.

Now let's see how I feel about it in a week xx.

40s Inspired Research Project ~ Day 34

The 1940s woman featured from the photo looks carefree and loving life and it puts a skip in my own step. Oh and loving that dress xo

Raw Beetroot Coleslaw ~ Day 33

This evening Phill is making his famous Raw Beetroot Coleslaw as part of dinner. It's perfectly balanced with the sweetness from the beetroot, sourness from the Apple Cider Vinegar and seasoned with the savoriness of garlic, salt and pepper.

If you haven't heard of The Raw Food movement before, it is all about enjoying a diet consisting of at least 70% fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds where their enzymes and goodness are retained for our maximum health and wellbeing, (cooked/heated foods above 46 degrees celsius, grains, sugar, dairy and a lot of what else we love eating is considered toxic to our bodies), and the philosophy "you are what you eat" certainly aligns itself to this lifestyle choice.

Eating raw food need not be boring either (what, another salad?) because there are plenty of taste bud tantalising recipes to enjoy.

For our salad tonight:

Toss Shredded Cabbage in a bowl with

Shredded Beetroot and thinly diced onion.

Make a dressing in a blender using organic apple cider vinegar,

cashew nuts, olive oil, water, lemon, garlic and salt and pepper.

Mix together in a bowl and you have one very simple but tasty dinner accompaniment. I love eating it with tomato, avocado and fresh pineapple on the side. To me it makes the perfect mouthful.

Did you also know that Cashews come from the Cashew Apple? Another great thing about eating raw is expanding our knowledge on the origins of our food.

We have our Raw Food Picnic coming up this Sunday and I've been looking for the perfect cake recipe. I am thinking this Flower Power cake with its fresh, zesty flavour could be it. It certainly is the prettiest cake around and is made from 100% raw, uncooked ingredients and is free from flour or dairy.

Piano Man & The Way We Used To Shop ~ Day 29

Okay, so I'm not talking about Billy Joel or even Robert Pattinson, (though I do thank him for supplying the image hehe). Recently I purchased a set of vintage cassette tapes of all the previous Academy Awards musical winners leading up to the early 80s. It's light orchestral music with predominant piano and the style took me back to a time when mum would take us kids to our local mall.

The mall looks very different now to when I was a kid and we once had these wonderful shops to explore which are no longer there. In their place is an over-abundance of chain stores. I was just reminiscing with a friend about this great delicattessen, filled with local and continental delights from around the world and operated by friendly, local Greek people. We also had a truly magical Christmas display in the festive season, with Santa on his big chair, waiting for you to tell him all you wanted . I'm sorry kids, you are really missing out because there really isn't anything quite like it anymore.

But back to the music because it reminded me of the man dressed very dapper in his black tail coat and bow tie, tinkling the ivories on the grand piano as we went about our shopping, (now it's Lady Gaga filling the aisles that you find yourself singing along to, only to make eye contact with the older chap across the way singing the same lyrics and you kinda smile/cringe to yourself. My experience this week anyhow). Shopping was a day out and a real experience. For some it still is, but I don't think it's quite like what it used to be. Is there anything you miss about the way we used to shop?

Happy Australia Day all :) This is a card Miss Lily made for me at school during the week of Australian animals and bush flowers. I had a car load of kids today and we all know that can be fun. So we began counting Australian Flags on cars and the outside of houses which kept them excited for the whole trip.

It's a nice quiet day here for us. So very humid and despite all the rain recently, I am hoping for an afternoon storm to cool the place down.

Vintage Manners: Is Chivalry Lost? ~ Day 24

It's yesterday afternoon in Serendipity while I'm putting final touches to the makeup and re-doing the "do" when from out of nowhere it seems, there is a terrential like downpour outside. Certainly not ideal you see, as I was expecting a photographer from a local paper doing a write up on our book club to arrive any minute for some shots.

Being all glammed up and now ready waiting, I stood in the doorway looking concernedly at the signs we put out each day. It was about this time that gale force winds tear one sign from its post, the other undone but still braced against it. So wearing a white top I had little choice but to make a mad dash out and save our signs (not a brolly or raincoat in site I'm afraid). As soon as I stepped out I was immediately drenched right through. No time to concern myself with feeling sorry for myself though, I had signs to save.

As I'm running down the street after the sign, I slow down once I'm almost on top of it and ready to pounce but it continues to skip along the street as if playing some cheeky little game with me. Now I do this for a bit which makes me look quite riduculous I'm sure (I am probably feeling sorry for myself about now) but eventually the sign is rounded up and I go for its partner which decides to play nice.

What I have failed to mention to this point is that directly across the road while this display is happening, and safely protected from the downpour under a shop awning, stands a man, just watching. Right in front of our shop another pulls up in his car, and just sits there. I make a mad dash into the shop to see what I can rectify of what is now mascara smudged cheeks and a drowned rat look only to see that I look like some scary participant from a wet tshirt competition. Not exactly the image I'm wanting to portray for the Serendipity Book Club.

Shortly after the man sitting in the car braves the rain and ducks into the shop. To check on me? To see if all is okay? Could he help perhaps? No, I'm afraid not but "did I have an umbrella to protect his expensive camera?" Yes, that's right, he was the expected photographer.

So now it begs the question of where have our knights in shining armor dissappered too? Is chivalry in general lost and gone for good? There are men I know personally who would have helped hands down but I have a feeling that chivalry could be on the out ladies. Should good manners be added to the school curriculum or perhaps have we killed it by opening our own car doors? Love to hear your thought ladies and gents xx

One thing I truly enjoy about working where I do, (if you can call it that), is the incredible shops that surround us. Just this evening I stumbled across the ES Traders Blog and as you can see from the images above, it is filled with amazing treasures (new/vintage/antique) sourced locally and further afar.

I feel like saying "Bon Appetit" because it really is a feast for the eyes. Situated at the end of Bon Laneway in an old industrial corrugated iron shed, there is no "if you get the chance" to visit this shop. It is a "Must See". Oh (now am I just bragging??), Serendipity is literally two shops up xx

Contentment ~ Day 21

I am a lover of "boring" for want of a better word. Today we have spent time buying more plants, soil, hay bails, and building garden beds (and why do these things always seem to take less time in your head? We still have plenty ahead of us tomorrow).

Now all I want to do is sit down to homemade macaroni cheese (pure comfort food), watch some Mr Bean with the kids, have a bath and tuck up in bed with a good book.

Not sure when "boring" entered my world, but to me I am the most content when doing this. Enjoy your Saturday night or morning, depending on what part of the world you may be reading this from xx

It's Friday & The Weekend's Here ~ Day 20

We have been planning time in the garden this weekend and fingers crossed it doesn't rain as we're putting in two new garden beds. This morning I bought some plants from Bon Laneway next door which are in the tray above, sitting cutely on the seat.
Fortunately the gorgeous lady who grows them was having coffee and explained in detail the conditions each plant thrives and loves to grow in. Amongst this lot are some greens for smoothies/juices, a purple capsicum and a rockmelon that resembles a pumpkin on the outside but apparently tastes delicious.

When I returned from next door, a delivery of the beautiful sunflowers I'd been admiring yesterday arrived wrapped in newspaper. Apparently Phill has been reading my blog...now what else do I love, let me think hehe xx

I have been meaning to post this blog all morning. With a shop and kids on holidays, blogs can end up being written on the laptop in bed that night. But that's okay because you know your day was full.

I have managed however early afternoon and it's a post of what I woke up to this morning. It's the arrangement on my bedside table. Grabbed my camera and snapped it as I saw it; My pile of books that I have begun but yet to finish (yikers!), my oriental dish of small treasures including my favourite semi-precious stone Turquoise and a small Le Tour Eiffel, vintage frames that are waiting to be filled with masterpieces, and finally a mug Lily gave me for Mother's Day two years ago filled with water and sipped at during the night.

I think the space you wake up to in the morning helps set the tone for the day. And this arrangement has seen me smiling through the day xo

It's Drizzling Outside ~ Day 17

It's drizzling outside today. We have candles lit in the shop adding extra comfort and warmth. Rain often reminds me of Paris.

Unfortunately I can't give you Paris but the other thing rain reminds me of is good reading weather and what I can give you is the Serendipity Book Club. I would love readers of the Vintage by Lou Lou blog to feel welcome and join in the discussion.

Following each meeting, I will bring to you the highlights of the discussion from book club and allow others the opportunity to post their own responses to each month's reading guide.

The Serendipity book club launches next month on Tuesday the 7th of February with a loved classic, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

We invite those interested to participate to indulge in the book between now and then and share with us a glass of wine over discussion points on the novel.

We follow this up in March with another Alcott book, "The Chase" or "A Long Fatal Love Chase" not as well known as "Little Women" and considered to have an entirely different feel altogether. It was controversial in its time and we will enjoy comparing the two novels.

Simple Wonderment ~ Day 15

So yesterday we went on a bit of a road trip down to the coast (a bit like the photo above). It was somewhat bleak and overcast outside and after awhile sightseeing out the window of one scene to another began to meld together and that's when the questions began about anything and everything really. We somehow got onto the topic of The "Bermoota" Triangle which then included a pronunciation and spelling lesson. From there it went to other unsolved mysteries of the world including;

Atlantis

The Pyramids

Stonehenge

I love all of this. It's what makes life interesting don't you think? That it isn't just always weetbix in the morning, getting ready and go to work, come home, have dinner and go to bed to do it all over again. Expand our minds I say, sit around a camp fire and tell ghost stories, read read read, stare at the stars, learn the constellations and wonder if that was a shooting star or space junk re-entering the atmosphere (or just wish upon it). Life is NOT boring. There is so much to learn and be EXCITED about and I think that is one thing great about kids always wanting to soak up this information....it is just simple wonderment.

Food That's Like a Big Old Hug ~ Day 14

There is something wonderful about the experience of cooking. I do not profess to be amazing at it but when you get it right, those flavours, they are dancing on your tongue, tantalising the tastebuds and all is good and right in that moment.

Tonight we were all in the kitchen making pasta for dinner. The grinding of the mortar and pestle, aroma of the fresh herbs wafting up from the chopping board and the occasional sip of wine from a glass between the tasting of the sauce is all part of the experience.

In that moment it reminded me of Jamie's Great Britain series which finished last night on channel 10. For David's last birthday I was very close to buying him Jamie's Great Britain cookbook as I was very much drawn to the exciting photography and intriguing recipe's capturing his homeland.

Instead I purchased Jamie's 30 Minute Meals (yes we are slightly addicted to him in this household) but I am now going back to the bookstore for this story filled cookbook of Britain's food, filled with rich history and origins from travellers near and afar who visited England many hundreds of years ago to more recent times.

While Phill was away Miss Lily turned 8 so last night we did go to Queens Park for that barbeque to celebrate and then it was back home for cake and coffee. The birthday girl helped decorate the cake in pure Lily fashion and after blowing out the candles, kissed the closest boy (lucky Uncle Ben).

As I sit here writing this I am enjoying polishing off another slice of the homemade chocolate cake that has been sandwiched together with jam and iced with buttercream. Certainly not the best lunch choice as I look at the time (12ish) but definitely delicious.

It's still so warm today in Ipswich which is a far cry from Phill's trip to NZ where he was wearing a hoodie for most of the two weeks away.

Phill's job sees him travelling regularly but he does not necessarily have the opportunity to do any real sightseeing. This means his snapshots are often from behind windows as they fly over states and countries or drive through towns, cities, villages etc.

Here are a few captured on his iphone that struck a chord with me. I think one thing that can be said about New Zealand is how truly beautiful it is.

Home Sweet Home ~ Day 9

Despite the heat and my dull headache because of it (and it is sweltering here, finally it feels a true Queensland Summer has arrived) I am enjoying the sweetness of Pistachio and Raspberry White Chocolate from New Zealand with a glass of crisp cold white wine. They don't typically mix but I'm excited to have Phill home and it is a gift from the land of the long white cloud. He has been telling me all about his time there and it is wonderful to hear the stories. Photos coming tomorrow after some quality time this evening.

Acting Out ~ Day 8

Roman Holiday

Scene 1, Act 1: I am not sure if it has anything to do with the amount of films I have been watching over the holidays but...I have this self indulgent need to perform. As kids it's fun to play and as adults I don't think this desire ever truly leaves us. Some people climb a cliff face, others dance to the early hours of the morning and I simply want to act.

And even if it is in the safe space of my lounge room with a good script and some friends who want to share the fun over a bottle of wine, that would be perfect to me. So what am I saying? The era of the Lounge Room Shakespearian Company?? Hmm not quite sure but if you're interested, do let me know. (PS Look how much fun Audrey's having) xx

Donna Hay Flourless Truffle Cake ~ Day 7

Today we baked a Donna Hay cake mix. They are a little more expensive than your other mixes but they are free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives and really do taste like the real deal making it so worth it in my mind.

Miss Lily was eager to help and here she is playing masterchef.

The extra ingredients required was butter and four eggs which came from backyard chooks locally.

Melting the chocolat and the butter on a low temperature.

Mixing it all together, it really is that simple.

And just sampling it to make sure all is okay for consumption.

Once baked we dusted with icing sugar, and plied with whipped cream and some fresh raspberry sauce.

David wanted to let you all know that he didn't think heaven could taste so good (and that's not putting words in his mouth, just cake hehe).

Hotel for Dogs ~ Day 6

Can you believe that we only have two weeks of holidays left before the kids go back to school, well in Queensland anyhow.

The past couple of days has seen Miss Lily open up her own Hotel for Dogs to a Maid Service (funny how I end up doing more cleaning up after games like these...) and anything in between.

And of course I am attempting to get the house in order before I return back to our shop Serendipity on Monday so at times like this you feel like you take one step forward and two backwards.

I actually think I'd be okay with mess as long as it was "attractively messy" or whatever that means, but I'm prepared to don my Indiana Jones hat and go in search of it.

This Way of Life ~ Day 5

I enjoy getting up in the morning before the kids do to potter around the house, do the dishes, catching up on the news from around the world while we were sleeping and that kinda thing.

I am a fan of ABC iView and in fact I am certain I could do away with a television now because of it. So I select a documentary to put on in the background as I begin unpacking the dish rack. The pots are put away and I begin on the juicer. But the documentary is This Way of Life and before it has hardly begun I am already txting Phill (who is still in NZ where the documentary is set) on us having to watch it together. I keep looking back at the screen, walk on over and finally sit down with my coffee.

You see, it is all about living, truly living. Not some youtube video on someone telling you how to live that once you've watched one you've really watched them all (I've given up looking for the holy grail on the secret to living/self help variety. It seems you can have all the knowledge under the sun about these things but the key is action, that is all). So in "giving up" I have stumbled on this jewel and this desire to tell the world about it while my dishes still wait for me (let them wait I say).

It tells of the Ottley Karena family who live in a remote location on the North Island of New Zealand where landscapes are expansive and incredibly breathtaking. The family is made up of Peter and Colleen and their six children, their lives very connected to the land and nature around them and not because it is trendy to be "sustaiable/eco/connected with nature" but because that is just their way of life. One could be forgiven for thinking that this family has stepped off a film that's set in colonial times because it is so incredible that a family still lives this way making it so very special.

There are other elements to the film including the rift between Peter and his Step Father which impacts quite heavily on his life but what speaks loudest in this film is the relationship between Peter and his own children and his love for his wife. It is difficult not falling in love with this family.

It is still available to watch on ABC IView and I'm interested in knowing, if this was the secret to happiness, do you think you could/would want to live like this? Or perhaps you are or know of a family who lives similar to this already?

Veggie Patch Inspiration ~ Day 4

My mind is still in the garden, on my dream veggie patch to be exact. I am a very visual person and so design is always considered in most things I do and exactly why the first two images from the Summer Solstice Chelsea Garden Show in 2008 make me smile.

I feel however that my budget is slightly less and so compromises will need to be made. But for me the raised beds are an absolute must. And for us it is also about being sustainable (ie no more wilted greens from the local supermarket but beautiful sun kissed leaves from our own backyard, the whole year through).

Another thing that gets me very excited is our backyard being filled with these garden beds and NO MORE lawn mowing. Hallelujah to that I say.

How does your Garden Grow? ~ Day 3

Today watering the garden I noticed our mangoes beginning to ripen, the capsicums which seem to have grown much larger over night, and the heaviness of the branches on my lemon tree weighted down by all the fruit. There is something so completely satisfying in watching your "garden grow".

Our pumpkin vine however is flowering without any bee loving so perhaps I will have to adopt the method of my old neighbour Emanuel who each day patiently dusts his flowers with a thin paintbrush.

Fun at Queen's Park ~ Day 2

It was ice cream and fun all round at Queen's Park yesterday afternoon. Situated on the outskirts of the heart of the city, it includes an animal and wildlife park, environmental centre, Japanese gardens, cafe and so much more (if you live in Ipswich, you are sure to already know about this amazing place).

The kids climbed, whizzed by, swung, spun, ran, hopped, danced and played. And of course, the kids didn't ever want to come home with Lily throwing a slight......wobbly.

The later afternoon light really is just beautiful there this time of year so next time we have promised to take a barbeque and have an early dinner. Okay, must dash as I hear Lily in the kitchen now making a cuppa tea.

366 Days ~ Day 1

Finally 2012 (a leap year), has arrived. Today has been a gorgeous day beginning with a leisurely breakfast with friends, a nap in the afternoon to recover from New Years celebrations and a beautiful afternoon visiting the grounds of the Croquet Club in Ipswich where I could truly have spent hours just enjoying the sun dappled lawns.

My resolutions do tend to be very similar each year so nothing new there but one extra I have added to the list is "366 Days" where I blog each day about my home town Ipswich, vintage living, family, food and enjoying life in general.

I hope you've had a wonderful start to the New Year and look forward to sharing this years journey with you here in the blogosphere...may it truly be a great year for all xo

The Humble French Baguette

Last night tucked up in bed alone, (Phill is currently touring NZ and falling in love with its landscape despite all the rain), I ended up falling asleep to a documentary series on the great cities of the world. Episode two was all about Paris (naturally!!) and I found it fascinating that as human beings who inhabit most areas of this incredible planet, our culture played an important role on the quality of our lifestyle.

It is evident that Parisian's are lovers of life and only ever expect the very best, from the preservation of their beautiful city to the morsels of food in which they devour (with effortless style and class, always!!). When it comes to the food it is never about the quantity either but the quality (the secret of the French Woman's slim figure is "small" portion sizes and not fat content).

What I sunk my teeth into though was that 70% of bread consumed in France is baked fresh from the bakery (not the sad pre-sliced loaves we get from the supermarket aisle for a dollar) unlike England at 3%!!! It does make me curious as to where Australia sits in the whole scheme of things and what value we place in our culture on a seemingly simple thing as "bread".

When I do think of the large factories producing our loaves of bread, I cannot be certain on all the ingredients that go into them (diagnosing what all the numbers on the label are can do my head in) but the ingredients in the Humble French Baguette is simply as follows:

Flour
Yeast
Salt
Water

And I am most certain love. Okay so perhaps Hollywood may have a role to play in my sappiness here but....I am yet to read that on the back of a loaf of bread here and in France I am certain you can taste that very ingredient with each bite. I do enjoy making goals each year (vision boards are all part of my process), but perhaps if I just remember that life can be that humble loaf, simple, reliable yet utterly enjoyable and overall loved.

And how about a little more of working to live rather than living to work. Otherwise life may end up looking like the pre-sliced dollar variety, and my taste buds are begging for more than that.

Mock Orange

We have been enjoying the simplicity of the flowering Mock Orange in repurposed vintage jugs used for vases. Our Christmas table featuring crisp white table cloths (not so much by the time lunch was finished may I add) and mum's beautiful blue and white dinner set, was adorned with this floral accent. Often you don't have to venture out to the florist shop to find something that can be absolutely perfect for what you need.

I hope you all had a beautiful Christmas day as we now prepare for New Years 2012.

Mele Kalikimaka

As we await Santa and his reindeer's visit this evening (who has cookies, milk and carrots out in preparation for his arrival?), I am singing to the one and only Bette Middler's "Cool Yule" album.

We have played enough Frank this Christmas and it has been refreshing to listen to something different. And so here is Bette's "From a Distance", the Christmas version. With the year we've had and as we head into 2012 I thought the message was perfect.

And my favourite that I've had on repeat and reminds of our tropical QLD, Bette's version Mele Kalikimaka.

Christmas Lights...

One of my favourite things about Christmas would have to be the lights. They truly add a sense of magic to the festive season.

Last night after working on some Christmas gift ideas, enjoying a glass of wine and watching one of my favourite Christmas films, I switched the lights off in preparation of heading to bed and I just stood there for a moment in awe of how beautiful the space looked, the lights adding their touch of magic once again...

Next to our little treasure boutique Serendipity, we have Bon Laneway (a trendy Melbournesque style of cafe). A lovely young woman was sitting enjoying breakfast and I asked if I could take a quick pic of it (a bit cheeky of me). It wasn't long before I followed suit and enjoyed a scrumptious croissant and homemade strawberry preserve (seriously delicious) and some of the best coffee in Queensland. Just another of Ipswich's best kept secrets that the world should know about. Lou xx

December 1st Means To Me...

Serendipity: A New Adventure

Miss Janette Adams (Precious Packages, Obsession Shoes, Ipswich Women in Business) and myself have been working on a little BIG project perfectly named Serendipity and a new retail space joining the Top of Town precinct in Ipswich (17 Ellenborough Street, Ipswich).

We are busy working away to have it looking beautiful for our opening this Thursday and the above image is one we have taken inspiration from. Friday is here and the weekend has almost arrived. Here are some snapshots of last weekend which we spent with a busload of friends visiting the Scenic Rim (approximately 45minutes from where we live in Ipswich). This weekend we are busy working on our new shop space in the Top of Town which will be opening soon....more on that next week. An Old Fashioned Games Night

We have a games cupboard over flowing (funnily enough) with games. The cupboard tends to grow at Christmas time or when we find a game we haven't got at a local garage sale or op shop. They get played around holiday time and occasionally on a Sunday afternoon. But in all honesty they tend to collect dust more than seeing daylight and being eagerly played.

Last night we made amends with that and had some old fashioned fun with the kids and friends. A gramophone played music suitably perfect for Charleston in the background, delicious conversation over dinner and some game fun with Twister, Connect 4 and Tripoley (involves a poker hand). No modern technology insight and everyone happy and content. Hmmm makes you think...

The Halloween "What to Wear" Dilemma of a Little Girl

This year I've noticed more available in the shop for Halloween to entice the kids. And I love Halloween. Always have and always will even if it has traditionally not been an Australian thing. I think it has something to do with any chance to play dress ups is a good thing and I admit I do enjoy a little scare factor (yes this nice vintage girl enjoys watching Horror flicks for example). But the sparkling, cheap fabric in the costumes at the shops have caught Lily's eye. Oh where is the true pleasure of putting something together (not to mention much more interesting) in the face of cheap, boring, eco un-friendly costumes, props and nick nacks.

I have photos (must try and fish those out again) as a girl standing around a fire in my scarecrow outfit roasting marshmallows. I probably thought that idea up on the day but that was all part of the fun. It included straw protruding from the belly (which mind you was stuffed with a cushion) of my check flannelette shirt and cute pigtails from under my flippy floppy hat. Yep, I was pretty much into raiding the cupboards at home and being as authentic as possible. Okay so one of my brothers may have wrapped a sheet around himself to suffice as Casper the friendly neighbourhood ghost but I'm pretty certain in his own mind he rocked the house. The point is it was all about imagination, being creative and coming up with these ideas ourself. And yes my dear Miss Lily, you will have to go to your own cupboard and become creative because well, it's more fun and fantastic that way on more than one level.

Monthly Painters Challenge ~ 3 Rolled into One

Being particularly busy over the past couple of months I've had to forgo the last two Monthly Painters Challenge and so when September's challenge rolled around (which was revealed to the world last Friday) it had me stumped.

The concept was "dislike" which honestly I struggled with especially at this point in my life where I prefer to focus on the positive. But in all honesty things are what you choose to make of them. I decided that what I did "Dislike" was the fact I was unable to complete the last two concepts, "Happiness" and "Safe" and that in this one piece I would resolve all three.

So here we have a diorama piece which I very much enjoyed creating. It is a Secret Garden of sorts where anything is possible and magic happens. Being mixed media I incorporated collage, found objects, pieces from nature and I feel it came together quite well. I definitely would enjoy creating other pieces like this in the future...so I guess watch this space :)

With all my focus in September on our fashion event, the stock for Vintage by Lou Lou dwindled. {Cushion Love}

Over a month ago I completed a customised cushion order for one of my customers. If you remember we began with these fabrics and here is the end result. All fabrics used here were preloved and vintage. I am forever collecting secondhand fabrics of all sizes because though you may not have a use for them right now you are sure to have a project down the track to create some crafty sensation.

Oh, and just to let you know we will be having a facebook auction tomorrow (Wednesday October 4th) beginning from midday (SEQ time) clearing out some VBLL pieces to make way for some Summer lovin'. And all beginning from $1.00. Gotta love that xo

This is the beautiful Ipswich home of Vanessa and Mathew Cobbin and I am just in love with its pretty pink and white colour scheme. It really is a house that little girls dream of I think. I am also adoring the kitchen and think it must be a place of family connectedness and I can see Winter nights spent around the warm stove top making hot chocolate and putting together a delicious supper.

{Father's Day Stall ~ This Sunday}

Instead of our "standard" open shop this month we are taking VBLL on tour (well right around the corner anyway) to Precious Packages in the Top of Town, Ipswich.

I remember when we were kids having the best Father's Day Stalls at school. The amount of times I would walk around those tables very carefully selecting something perfect for Dad, each time seeing something new and exciting. Everything was hand crafted or home baked and wrapped in cellophane with curled ribbon. Things aren't quite like that anymore (please let me know if your school is, I'd love to hear about it) so I want to bring back a bit of that old fashioned Father's Day Stall.

You will find the Vintage by Lou Lou & Precious Packages Father's Day Stall out the front of Precious Packages with plenty of goodies for dad this Sunday, the 28th of August from 8.30am-12.30pm.

These two photos were sitting side by side today on my desktop and I thought I'd share them today. They are snapshots of my Sunday.

The first is of fresh silverbeet, rosemary and sun ripened tomatoes from my dad's garden. I have already used the silverbeet in healthy green smoothies and some of the rosemary in a pumpkin risotto last night. And I think those juicy tomatoes will be a perfect accompaniment to fajitas this evening, a family favourite. I'm hungry just thinking about it.

The below image is of some vintage and upcycled fabric to be used for a cushion order. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they turn out. I really love to mix and match fabrics together and things that you initially think may not work. I will have some photos of the finished product to share with you soon.

I know it's August but I wanted to share with you these photos of the Ipswich Women in Business's Christmas in July (and it had an Italian flavour). We were raising funds on the evening for Team Cupcake which is an incredible cause and a recently founded organisation supporting women living with Cancer. I think the photos say it all because we had such an incredible evening and everything was just beautiful.

{Keeping it Local & Keeping it Fresh}

This afternoon I'm enjoying the simplicity of a bowl of strawberries. A chap was walking through town selling them while I was there and I grabbed a large punnet. How great to directly support the livelihood of a local grower/seller. I also loved the excitement in a little girl's face when she pulled out a giant strawberry that was as big as her hand.

Speaking of buying direct from farmer to customer, I'm really wanting to take a Sunday drive to Waywillanwy Farm near Boonah to an Organic Market they have from their shed. I don't think you could get any fresher or better than that.

Where do you buy your fresh produce, meat, or even dairy from? Perhaps it's a local farmer's market or you are fortunate enough to live near growers. And I love this idea, what about sharing produce with neighbours that you might grow in your back yards, just like our grandparents used to do. I would love to know where your produce comes from and I think it's wonderful to be able to share this information.

{Jamie's Tiramisu}

For our Christmas in July we went for an Italian theme which saw me whipping up Jamie's Tiramisu from his Cook Book, "Jamie's Italy". Lashings of Vanilla bean infused mascapone on top of layered sponge splashed with coffee and vin santo and then finally finished with shavings of dark chocolate and orange zest appealed to my palate. The flavour of the end result did not let me down. I do think next time I'll reduce the amount of liquid used but it certainly will become a firm favourite and is so simple to make. I decided it would look fantastic in preserving jars and so my above photograph is part of what our guests received for dessert that night. Buon Appetito!

Hello All. I hope you've all enjoyed your weekend? Mine was spent co-hosting (wearing another hat of mine, Ipswich Women in Business) a Christmas in July event with all the trimmings (more to come on that soon) and enjoying the kid's school fete yesterday which I always look forward to every year.

And now I'm super excited for this next weekend to arrive as I prepare an Open Shop for Vintage by Lou Lou on Saturday (9am-1.00pm). I extend an invitation for all to attend who love vintage loveliness and enjoy old fashioned cake and other deliciousness. We will also have as our guest Sassy Cosmetics which we love not only because they use natural and organic ingredients in their range, but as they are a local based business too.

{Monthly Painter's Challenge ~ Ritual}

Our June Monthly Painter's Challenge concept was Ritual and it was fantastic to see how the group approached the topic. Ritual can be so many things to so many people. We can think of rituals of the ancient Mayans or even religious rituals that have been passed down to us today begun thousands of years ago. I chose something a little more simple that I still wake up to every day and have been since my high school days. In my teenage years I tried every natural beauty treatment under the sun from cucumber slices on the eyes, avocado face masks to a squeeze of lemon in warm water every morning. And to this day, though most other beauty treatments have fallen along the wayside, the lemon in warm water remains and has become my morning ritual.

{The Beauty of Somerset...}

We've had a bit of an emotional roller coaster over the school holidays but I was pleased for the kids sake that we ended it on a higher note. We had the opportunity to go hovercraft-ing on Sunday at Somerset Dam which can I say was plenty of fun. Somerset was incredibly beautiful with all its rolling hills and the drive there was stunning as we came around many winding roads and over bridges with sun dancing on water running underneath. I also really appreciated the beauty of the straw coloured grass against the blue of the water that I had to capture a few shots.

{A Visit to the Country}

Yesterday I visited the countryside out our way and of course we stopped in at the little shops along the way. Here are some photos from around the Marburg Antique Centre. There are certainly plenty of treasures to find here though I tended to photograph pieces that were appealing to my "rustic" side. I also loved on entry the smell of the old kerosene lamps burning and being greeted by a blue and white dish of lemons....one of my favourite things at the moment.

The Tree

About 40 minutes away from us out west (Kalbar) there is "The Tree", where they filmed the 2010 closing film for Cannes of the same name. This morning I have been watching it, inspired. This landscape is hauntingly beautiful and if you have ever taken a drive out that way (in fact you may have even driven past "The Tree") you know what I'm speaking of and perfect for the tone of the film which touches on magic.

Beautiful and talented French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg plays a mother with four incredible young Australian actors as her kids who experience grief together in this somewhat disjointed family. I love this film for the natural delivery of the characters to the set design (green, olive and red featured throughout the whole film complimenting this Australian landscape). It's definitely worth hiring for a movie night in if your wandering what to get out.

By the way, they searched far and wide for the perfect tree...

Monthly Painter's Challenge ~ Light

Recently I was invited to be part of a "Monthly Painter's Challenge" group on Facebook where each month we are presented with a new topic to interpret. For the month of May it was "Light" and today we had our big reveal. Ok so my interpretation lead me down the photographic path rather than the typical paintbrush and canvass direction but was allowable and I was very grateful for. So here I feel I've presented something a little more abstract and contemporary than what I normally would with found glass objects to capture "light".

Rugging Up This Winter

Cate's take on Rugging Up

In my previous post (and by the way I have my appetite back which makes me think I'm truly on the mend) I mentioned how we have decided to give "heating" a miss this year. I'm pretty certain if we were in a colder climate this would be miserable. The difference I feel in QLD though is our homes are made for the heat and not for the cold and therefore we truly feel Winter. There were a couple of factors behind this decision however. First of all I'm trying to minimise our carbon footprint and secondly I am curious as to how low we can keep our electricity bill as costs in general keep rising (which from memory was just below $200 for this last quarter).

So how do we do it? Layers, plenty of lovely layers to keep us warm. This includes thermals, thick socks, ugg boots around the house, and plenty of outer layers. Put more on if you need it, take it off if you don't. Plenty of warm tea helps also or cocoa for the kids and moments in the sun when it decides to come out. In the evenings when we're on the couch, we are snuggled up under a warm duvet together watching maybe a movie or playing a game. Sometimes I do wish we had that fire place but that's more for the ambiance factor rather than for its heat...though that'd be nice too.

Our little household is recovering from some horrid flu/cold thing and to add some sunshine (not to mention it has been freezing here & we have decided to forgo our heating this year ~ but that's another blog), I put on & watched an ol' faithful, "Under the Tuscan Sun". The above quote really appealed to me that day. I think we can surround ourselves with beautiful things but what is anything without joy, happiness and laughter. And I do think our homes become our fortress where we feel protected from the world, our safe place. But I think most strongly the quote means to me to never give up on your hope and always have faith. Remember life is what you make it and "never lose your childish innocence. It's the most important thing." (as explained by the character "Katherine" from the film). Sometimes I think we need these gentle reminders, no matter where they come from :)

On Sunday I created this display and was quite happy with what I came up with. The weather is so sunny and warm during the day at the moment (though looking doubtful today) that I felt playing with this beach theme was quite appropriate.

This cane serving trolley is available through my ebay shop at the moment...popping up plenty of things there this month so who knows what you might see each time you visit?

{What to wear when collecting eggs?}

If ever you were in any doubt as to what the perfect outfit would be to collect eggs, I feel Lily captured it last weekend. Here she is wearing a pretty floral blue smock with a blue vintage apron in a contrasting pattern but perfectly complimentary to each other. Team it up with some gumboots and the perfect vintage basket (we painted this one white a couple of years ago for a fun easter activity) and you have your perfect egg collecting outfit or kitchen garden one for that matter.

{Tirra Lirra ~ An Ipswich Treasure}

I've spent a glorious day in Ipswich soaking up the festival vibe as it celebrates this great little city. I absolutely enjoyed my time visiting the Tirra Lirra & Boutique Tres Chic (On Bell Street right in the the heart of the city) ladies dressed in their finest.
I took some quick snaps of the space as it's in an old law building that has plenty of character, fine espresso, fantastic art and gorgeous fashion.

I didn't take any photos of Boutique Tres Chic just yet as I think I'll do a blog alone on the gorgeousness of that space and all it has to offer. Anyhow Tirra Lirra is certainly a space to watch as it has plenty of things coming up throughout the year including wine tastings to fashion events.

{Time to Smell the Roses}

Good morning all. I've been up early, washing on and pottering away in my studio. As I speak Leroy my dog is running back and forwards barking oh so importantly and pretending to be tough as he sees walkers by (my studio space is attached to our verandah which he's running out onto.) I've just been told it's too chilly to have the doors open but I'm sitting here all rugged up and I think it's nice and fresh. Anyhow I'll be working out there shortly as I begin to take photos of new stock :)

So amongst my pottering this morning I trimmed these roses and placed them in an old blue glass bottle. This is what I'll be admiring in my studio space as I work away today. I've also attached a photo of Miss Lily at Easter time smelling the roses...an absolute modern day princess complete with tough sticker.

At the moment I am collecting all things that inspire me in the way of fashion...a little project I have coming up this Spring. I came across this image of Nicole (and though it doesn't say Spring, it definitely says me all over it!!) and fell instantly in love. What inspires you about fashion? Do you look for comfort and are you willing to forgo that as long as you're looking smokin' hot? I know when I am home comfort is all I care for but when I go out I am only comfortable if I take care in how I dress. Would love to hear your thoughts ladies....and any gents out there xo

{A Ship A'hoy}

Recently a family friend set sale with a group of ladies in a yacht in the Brisbane to Gladstone race. Mum and I dropped a small group of the ladies to Shorncliffe (Brisbane North), the race start line. I was able to board their yacht, check out under deck and take a few snaps. There is definitely something about being on a beautiful yacht, admiring its craftsmanship and enjoying its gentle creaking as it waited patiently tied to the jetty.

To me boats are symbols of lands awaiting to be discovered, adventures yet to happen and islands to be explored. I even once had a dream of sailing the Mediterranean, stopping in at ports to embrace different cultures of the area, indulge on their cuisines and enjoy all they had to offer. Funny, I have only remembered all of this now. I must bring it up with the kids tonight and see what they think of the idea. Who knows....perhaps when they're older???

Okay enough daydreaming for now (though it's always plenty of fun!). What I would love to say now is a HUGE thank you to Michelle Mitchell for being part of the VBLL April Give Away. I really appreciate it and after using random number picker would like to congratulate Tammi from Little Poppa as our winner. After re-reading your comment Tammi, I really feel you will benefit from reading "What Teenage Girls Don't Tell Their Parents".
